Why I Love Spotify

One of the things I often mention on Twitter is what I’m listening to on Spotify (and I’m sure most people reading this blog (if anyone is ;) ) already know what Spotify is, but for those who don’t…

Spotify is basically an online music streaming service which allows you to listen to music online either for free (with adverts and if you don’t have an invitation some limits) or for a flat monthly fee.  I was fortunate enough to get one of the unlimited free accounts – yay!

What’s really cool about Spotify is that you can try out new music before you buy it (or as is often my case listen to a musical cast recording to see if I’d like the music from a musical I’m planning to see) and you can use it almost like your own private radio station which only plays the music you want to listen to.

The free accounts are funded by adverts which I don’t think are too distracting either!

Was There Any Point To This Post?

Um, er, well believe it or not – yes there was (I think) – I’ve heard that a number of writers listen to a particular album or tracks when they’re writing so what better way is there to find music that fits a book, character etc than on Spotify.

More so with premium accounts in that you can take your playlists away from the computer and listen to them on your phone.

Anyhoo – if you want to grab yourself Spotify – here it is: www.spotify.com.  I <3 it!

The Buckingham Palace Fence…

Is this weeks photo of the week :D

I know, I know a tad unusual but I wanted something a little bit different this week, after three weeks of photos of Croyde I thought it might be nice for a change.

It was taken on Saturday (before the weather turned grey and yukky) and was taken on an angle to the fence (which is why it’s going diagonally hehe).

The only reason I like this photo at all is because of the contrast between the black and gold of the fence and the crystal blue sky.

As usual here’s the photo in all it’s glory (if it can be called that, that is).

A Trip To The London Palladium

Hmm, isn’t that an interesting photo – flash wouldn’t go off on my camera for some reason so I’ve got it in silhouette form lol!

Anyhoo, for anyone who didn’t know yesterday I went to London for the London production of Sister Act The Musical at the London Palladium (matinee) and this is (for anyone who cares lol) what happened.

I was on the 040 Bristol to London national express coach which left Bristol Marlbourough Bus Station at 8:45am!!! I still can’t believe it costs the same amount to get to London from Bristol (£6) as it does to get from Bristol to Bath.

As I arrive in London at Victoria I can’t help but take a photo of my current favourite London theatre – the Apollo Victoria, home to the absolutley fantastic Wicked! It looks fab in the day but it’s in the night when it looks like something else. Sadly it was daylight so I had to make do with a daylight one!

First stop on my list was Buckingham Palace (I’ve never been and I had a few hours to kill) – it’s HUGE. I got there and the crowds were out in their hordes but managed to grab a picture of the guards before standing way back to try and get a picture of the palace – I couldn’t get it all in, no matter how much I tried.

Next, I was off to Dress Circle in Covent Garden – well I say this, that was the planned destination but I kind of missed the turning off Shaftesbury Avenue (oops!) and ended walking up a little too far, but a bit of guessing and a lot of ‘I must be heading roughly in the right direction’ and I eventually found Monmouth Street.

The shop is full of musical theatre products from CDs to merchandise to programmes and music books – heaven! While I was in there they even put on the Legally Blonde London cast recording – sounded awesome. I bought the Avenue Q Companion book – all orange and fury :)

From there it was very easy to see how I missed the turning (and added a good 20 minutes in walking time) as I got back onto Shaftesbury Avenue in about five minutes. Then it was onto the London Palladium through quite probably a less than standard route – down along the side of the Gielgud Theatre and walking basically in almost a straight line (with one left turning).

Thinking about it, it explains why I ended up at the stage door of the London Palladium (almost completely missed it). Anyway a little walk further down followed by a right turn into Argyll Street and I was there – Sister Act was fabulous despite being Whoppi Goldberg-less (best wishes of course go to her and her family). It’s such a fun and uplifting musical with tons of comedy moments – not to mention fab sets and music. Helen Walsh did a great job of standing in for Whoppi in the role of Mother Superior.

Coming back out of the Palladium, the weather had changed from being lovely and sunny as it had been when I went in to being grey, rainy and drizzily. From there I took the short journey down to the London Eye (couldn’t resist not having a look – having now been to London three times and not seeing it would have been tragic lol).

A quick bus ride back to Victoria and I was back on the coach back to Bristol – all in all a great day.

P.S A review of Sister Act will be appearing on my Musical Theatre blog in the next day or so ;)

Quick Tip To Save Money With An Android Phone

A couple of weeks ago (as some of you may know) I bought an LG Optimus Phone with T-Mobile – now it’s only been a couple of weeks but I already love it!

However I had one smaill(ish) issue with the phone (which uses Google’s Android operating system) – T-Mobile were charging me for data access on their network which I had no clue I was using, I tried disabling background data synchronisation (which slowed down the charges) but the charges were still slowly building and I couldn’t for the life of me work out which application or part of the phone were causing these small charges to be applied to my account.

So today I did a little search and found that I can disable the phones ability to connect to T-Mobiles (and other mobile providers) data networks by changing something called APN’s. (No idea what this stands for).

Apparently they are really easy to change but I found it even easier to download the APNDroid app from the Android Market which can make the changes for you at the touch of a button – yippee!

Once installed all you have to do is tap the big button towards the top of the app so that the red bar turns white and job done. A quick test by disabling my wireless connection revealed that the data connection was disconnected!

Learning Defying Gravity On Piano

For anyone who doesn’t know me (through Twitter etc) I am learning to play the piano (on, well – a keyboard – not ideal but it (just about) does the job). Anyway one of the reasons I wanted to learn to play the piano is because I know that music from musicals can sound absolutley fabulous when played on them.

I mean check out this person playing Defying Gravity…

I’d really love to be able to play like that!

A couple of weeks ago in my piano lessons we started working on this very song (I’m so excited I can’t put it into words) and although it doesn’t yet sound much like the above (I’m much slower lol) I think the process we’re using to work it out is the same.

I can only say this because on the small section were working on at the moment I can see what he’s doing and it’s the same only (a lot) faster. So I can understand now how the melody will sound much stronger once it’s speeded up (and I get the emphasis right).

While I’m practising speeding this up we’ve moved to the start of the song and it’s starting to sound right *squee*!

That’s enough from me, I’ll leave you with another song of my favourites peformed on Piano, Schadenfreude…

Fingers crossed I’ll get to this standard one day :D

My Photo Of The Week – Um, Croyde Again!

I promise every week will not be a photo of Croyde but my camera is absolutley full of photos of the place – this one though I think is the last decent(ish) one that I have of the beach and sea.

Next week there will be a definate change in the photos as I will (hopefully) have lots of pictures of London landmarks (and West End theatres). Bearing in mind that this all depends on my ability to remember my camera and so far the track record on this is 0%!

Anyhow this photo was taken from one of the back entrances to the beach – Croyde has (as far as I’m aware) two beach entrances (um, okay make that four entrances – thank you Rachel ;) ), one which is on the main road and the other behind the holiday park – this one is taken from behind the holiday park (the nicer of the two entrances).

As always here is the photo in full!

Over 5 Hours Spare In London – What To Do?

Let the countdown begin (well for me anyway), next Saturday I’ll be hopping on a National Express coach (train is sadly out of my price range) across to London (yipeee) to see Sister Act – The Musical at the London Palladium.

The thing is that the performance starts at 3pm and lasts for around 2 and a half hours but I should be arriving in London at around 11:20am and I won’t be leaving until 8pm from the *ahem* glamorous Victoria Coach Station.

I have to say there is one tiny (stupid) reason that I like going to London by coach – it means I get to walk past my (current) favourite West End theatre – the Apollo Victoria, and as I will have my camera with me (or at least a better phone camera) I will be able to have a nice picture of it this time around (not blury like my last one).

Anyway (getting back to the point of this post) this means I will have more than five hours to play with either side of the performance and apart from going down to the Victoria Embankment I’m not really sure what else to do – any suggestions?

Just 7 sleeps till London, Sister Act and Whoppi Goldberg (and I’m sitting near the front – no other word (if it can be called a word) can describe this feeling other than *squeeeee*!)

A Little Experiment

I recently read this interview with Marsha Moore (aka Talli Roland) on Nicola Morgan’s Help! I Need A Publisher blog where Marsha mentioned that on one of her blogs she comments on all bloggers blogs who comment on hers – noticing that this helped increase followers and comments on her blog – sounds reasonable!

You can visit Marsha’s blogs at http://marshawrites.blogspot.com and at http://talliroland.blogspot.com

Sooo, I thought I would give it a go on a brand new blog as well as on my books 4 teens blog – alongside increasing my comments on other related blogs.

The new blog I’m going to be trying this on is …

Money Saving Toolkit.

This Weeks Photo Is Croyde With Lots Of Sea

I’ve decided (no idea how long this will last) to change the photo in the header around once a week along with a post so anyone whose interested in finding out where the photo was taken can, well – find out!

So this weeks photo was once again taken at Croyde (you’ll start noticing a pattern soon – I’m pretty sure!) taken from along one (is there more than one) of the costal walks.

Like last week, below is the photo in full.

The Only Time I’ve Been In A Paper…

The Student Newspaper that is!

When I started university back in 2005 (I can’t believe it was 5 years ago) I decided I would help out with Western Eye, the UWESU (University of the West of England Student Union) student run newspaper.

I ticked the box in my first year but then completley bottled it (I was and I still am incredibly shy around people in the offline world – turning down almost anything that involves socialising – crazy I know but I’ve always been like it and I don’t think it will change any time soon).

That was until my final year when I plucked up the courage to try again – this time around I contacted the editor for the year during the summer and got some more info. I missed the first meeting though – not entirely my fault, I had a timetabling clash!

After a shaky start I did manage to attend some of the meetings throughout the year and got to help out including transcribing interviews and I managed to write two articles which were printed in the newspaper – one twice (as it was commented on in the next issue).

For some reason I kept all of the editions of Western Eye that year and after a brief flick through found one of the articles that I wrote – here it is:

I’m still incredibly shy though!
